Regular price $150.00This Oxford shirt is dyed using cherry blossoms from Daigo-ji Temple in Kyoto, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The pink warp threads are dyed with color extracted from these cherry blossoms.
About the “Daigo-ji Cherry Blossoms”
Known since the Heian period as a prime cherry blossom viewing spot, Daigo-ji is home to around 700 cherry trees, including weeping cherry, Somei Yoshino, wild cherry, and double-flowered varieties.
It is also famously associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who held an extravagant cherry blossom viewing party here in his later years—an event known as “Daigo no Hanami.”
What is Botanical Dye?
Botanical dye is an evolved form of traditional Japanese plant dyeing techniques. As the name suggests—“botanical” (plants) and “dye”—this method uses color extracted from various natural sources such as plants, flowers, and nuts to dye materials like cotton and wool.
Unlike conventional plant dyeing, which typically uses only about 20% natural dye and relies heavily on chemicals for color fixation, botanical dye employs a special adhesive to bind natural ingredients directly to the fibers. This allows the dye to maintain over 60% natural content, making it a more environmentally and human-friendly dyeing method.
Additionally, since a single plant can contain over 100 pigment components, the resulting colors have a richness and depth that cannot be achieved with synthetic dyes—one of the key appeals of botanical dye products.
