Regular price $99.00Botanical Dye Cotton T-Shirt
The concept is a cut-and-sew shirt that looks great worn on its own. The design avoids tapering from the chest to the waist, allowing the fabric to drape beautifully for a clean silhouette. The moderately loose fit provides a relaxed feel. With well-balanced shoulder-to-sleeve proportions and a clean neckline, it's also recommended for unisex wear. It's sure to be a great addition to your wardrobe during Japan's hot summers.
What is Botanical Dye?
Botanical dye is a unique dyeing technique developed in Japan, building upon traditional plant-based dyeing methods. As the name suggests, "botanical" refers to plants, while "dye" refers to coloring agents. This technique uses a variety of natural sources such as plants, flowers, and nuts to create dyes that are then used to color cotton, wool, and other fabrics.
Traditional plant-based dyes use only about 20% natural materials, with a lot of chemicals added to fix the color. In contrast, botanical dye uses a special glue to attach natural substances to fibers, maintaining a ratio of over 60% natural dye, making it a more environmentally and human-friendly dyeing method. Additionally, because a single plant can contain over 100 different pigments, the colors achieved with botanical dye have a depth that can't be replicated with synthetic dyes, making it one of its attractive qualities.
With its unique and deep hues derived from nature, clothing dyed with botanical dyes brings the soothing colors of plants and flowers to your wardrobe.

*Please note:
I bought two Vintage Ivy tab collar shirts after seeing Kamakura recommended on Instagram and reading about tab collars in Graham Marsh’s book. The tab collars make such a difference. I was on a work trip to Milan (during fashion week as well) and didn’t feel too out of place without having to go to any extra effort
Beautiful fabric, great construction & fit. Fits as listed in the size chart.
Apparently, I am NOT a 161/2-34 in this Tokyo Slim Fit. The sleeves are at least 1” too short. Looks ok when your arms are at your side, but the moment you extend your arm to shake someone’s hand, the sleeve rides up. I emailed Kamakura Shirts asking for a solution, stating that I travel to Japan annually and always wanted to try this shirt brand as I would likely buy more. Also, it would appear, that a 161/2-35 is not offered. So FAR, no one has replied to my email.
perfect oxford shirt for work and leisure. Needs another button
I was so excited to receive my first shirt from Kamakura today. I had read about Kamakura on Ivy Style. I bought the biggest shirt available a "17 1/2". The size chart said 26 1/2" sleeve. It's a great looking tatersall fabric with great details (box pleat, locker tab). I am 6'5" and weigh 250 lbs (38 inch waist). Imagine my horror when I tried it on and discovered by "trad" US standards, my beautiful shirt is really a "slim cut". Wonderful company but their ready to wear is not "Ivy" cut ...not by a mile. Too much trouble to return to Japan. "Once burned twice shy"...regretably becuase it is a beautiful shirt. Hey! Maybe I wll suddenly lose 30 pounds. I'll stick with J. Press, O'Connells, The Andover Shop and Cordings.
