Vintage Ivy Needlecord Shirt
*Comes with a specially designed postcard by Graham Marsh.

These warm autumn/winter button-down shirts in white, green, cerulean blue, and navy blue are made from high-quality, Japanese needlecord fabric — a much finer version of corduroy ideal for shirting. The weaving, dyeing, and finishing of the fabric are all done in the Enshu region of Shizuoka Prefecture, where 95% of Japanese corduroy is produced. The fabric is dyed in a drum washer and sun-dried, a method that avoids rollers crushing the ridges in the fabric. The fabric is then singed with fire, wetted, and kneaded to create an ultra-soft texture only possible through Japanese manufacturing.
"For a brief period in the 1960s corduroy was everywhere, there were even corduroy shoes. Kamakura have revived this material by making a Vintage Ivy shirt in a very fine, soft needlecord. This button-down classic is available in four traditional colours. Deep navy blue, green, mid blue and white. Get one in every colour, you won't regret it."

-Graham Marsh, Co-Author of "IVY LOOK",
Designer of "Kamakura Shirts Vintage Ivy Collection

In the 1960s, Mr. Marsh, deeply influenced by the jazz and Ivy League look of the time, encountered Kamakura Shirts fifty years later in 2012. The meticulously crafted Kamakura Shirts' Oxford button-downs evoked memories of the Ivy League style of that era. Since that encounter, Mr. Marsh has been consistently designing new pieces every year, and we have been committed to creating products that meet the expectations of those who look forward to Mr. Marsh and the VINTAGY IVY COLLECTION.

The perfect ‘white shirt alternative’…

Taking a cue from another reviewer’s testimony (of similar proportions), at 6’0 175lbs., I opted for the size 16. (Looking for a bit more of a fitted silhouette.) In this shirt, the choice was spot on. Dare I say typical…[probably more apropos to say, as expected], Kamakura/Japanese quality. Not a missed stitch.
This is the perfect Fall alternative to the pressed cotton white shirt.

Lovely

My fourth Kamakura shirt, and certainly not my last!

The corduroy is simply luxurious, yet masculine. The teal color is bold, yet soft. Not as thick as I expected, which is good as I tend to run hot.

The stitching is excellent, buttons and holes are clean, and the collar sits perfectly—not as big as some of the historical shirts, but I prefer it this way. I would have preferred an additional button below, and stitched a bar tack on the cuff for a better sleeve roll.

I'm 5'11", 180 lbs with a broader chest/shoulders and slim arms, and the 16.5 works well as a relaxed-fitted shirt for me. I have a size Large in the Tokyo 134 fit--the sizing chart would suggest this 16.5 is a touch wider and longer, but it ended up larger than I expected. I presume that a 16 would also fit, but I'm digging the relaxed look as I enter my early thirties. Will likely stick to 16.5 in the future. Given my height, the sleeves are a touch long (but passable), and the shirt is only suitable to be tucked in as-is—I'm considering taking some length off.

Customer service is A+, helpful with Q&As, and shipment was lightning fast to Canada.

Quality from the past

My father had a soft, ample corduroy shirt when I was growing up 50 years ago. I’ve finally found the direct descendant.
