CHESTER COAT

-ALL MADE IN JAPAN-

Miyuki Sewing Co., Ltd.'s Otaru Factory is located in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan. Established in 1971 to preserve the craftsmanship of tailoring men's clothing, the factory now boasts over 50 years of history. Housed in a historic building that was formerly a First Bank branch, the factory specializes in sewing high-quality men’s and women’s clothing, particularly jackets and coats.

The facility combines modern technology, such as CAD for marking and automated cutting machines (CAM), with traditional skills like hand-finishing by seasoned artisans. Under the direction of Factory Manager Takanori Kawamura, the team pursues innovative collaborations with international brands and develops new products, ensuring continued excellence and high-quality production.

The factory also offers custom suit services, including fittings in its in-house fitting room, and allows visitors to tour the factory.

Products

The hallmark of a classic Chester coat is its timelessness, ensuring it remains stylish in any era. This coat is crafted with a focus on quality materials and impeccable tailoring, resulting in a design that is both simple and enduring.

You will sense an understated elegance befitting a truly classic coat.

The fabric is part of Miyuki Keori’s "OLDEN YEARS" collection, a line that recreates archived pieces from 1950 to 1980. It features a rich herringbone pattern created with heathered yarns, giving it depth and texture. Despite its substantial look and structure, it offers a surprisingly lightweight feel, adding to its charm when tailored.

This Chester coat meets the traditional standards, with a length that reaches below the knees. Its classic fit is unaffected by trends, making it a truly timeless piece that’s perfect as a "lifetime" coat.

The right waist change pocket, a detail rooted in British tradition, adds a subtle yet stylish accent to the coat's simple design. It's a small touch that enhances its classic appeal.

Manufacturing

This Chester coat is meticulously crafted by artisans with Japan's finest techniques, requiring about one week to complete each piece. The time and care dedicated to its construction are evident not only in its appearance but also in its exceptional comfort and quality.

Hand-stitched Finish

The armholes and inner sleeve edges, areas where machines cannot reach, are meticulously hand-stitched, one stitch at a time. This process takes about 30 minutes per coat, but it is a crucial step that greatly impacts the final quality and finish.

Half Canvas Construction

The collar and shoulder area—the core of the coat’s structure—use a light, soft canvas. Sewing this canvas requires advanced skill, achieving a natural, three-dimensional shape and a comfortable fit that sits seamlessly on the shoulders.

Ironwork

Areas where a press machine can’t reach are carefully aligned and shaped by hand with an iron. This process requires time and precision to create natural curves that conform to the body’s contours, especially around the collar, shoulders, and chest.
